Gauntly: A Sweet Handwritten Font That Elevates Brand Design

Starting the Project: A Blank Canvas and a New Font

There’s always that moment when a branding project kicks off—blank canvas, fresh ideas, and the quiet excitement of shaping a visual identity. This time, I was working with a small artisanal bakery opening its first storefront. The brief was warm, inviting, and handcrafted. I wanted typography that reflected that same personality. I had just downloaded Gauntly, a handwritten script font with a soft, cool vibe, and I was curious to see how it would fit into the brand’s look and feel.

First Impressions: Softness Meets Style

Gauntly immediately stood out. It’s not your average script font. It has a gentle bounce and just the right amount of imperfection—like someone carefully wrote it by hand. The lowercase letters have a relaxed rhythm, and the uppercase characters are expressive without being overwhelming. It feels both modern and nostalgic, which made it a perfect match for a small business that wanted to feel personal yet polished.

Logo Design: A Signature Vibe

I started with the logo. I tried a few variations using Gauntly as the main logotype. The result was surprisingly strong. The font gave the bakery’s name a signature-like quality—like it was hand-signed by the owner. I added a simple line illustration of a croissant next to the text, and the whole thing felt warm and human. The client loved the idea that the logo looked like it came from a handwritten recipe card but still had a clean, professional edge.

One thing I noticed was how well Gauntly held up in different sizes. At small sizes on business cards, it remained legible, and at larger sizes on signage mockups, it had a bold presence. It’s definitely a display font at heart, but it’s versatile enough to work in multiple brand touchpoints.

Brand Identity: From Packaging to Social Media

Once the logo was approved, I moved on to the packaging. I used Gauntly for the bakery’s label stickers and tags. The font’s soft curves and casual rhythm gave the packaging a handmade, boutique feel. I paired it with a clean sans serif for supporting text, which created a nice contrast and kept the design from feeling too whimsical.

For social media, I placed Gauntly over warm-toned photography and pastel backgrounds. It worked beautifully as a headline font in Instagram stories and Pinterest graphics. It added a personal, artisanal touch that felt authentic to the brand’s voice. I also used it in printed flyers and thank-you cards, where its handwritten charm really shined.

Testing for Readability and Consistency

Of course, I made sure to test Gauntly across different applications. I printed samples to see how it looked on matte paper and tested it on screen at various resolutions. One thing I appreciated was how the font maintained its character without sacrificing clarity. It’s definitely best used in short-form text—like headlines, brand names, or taglines—rather than long paragraphs. But for branding purposes, that’s exactly where it shines.

Font Pairing: Balancing Personality

I paired Gauntly with a minimalist sans serif to keep the brand system balanced. Using a clean typeface for body text and navigation menus helped maintain visual hierarchy and professionalism. I also experimented with a serif font for editorial-style content on the bakery’s website blog. The contrast between Gauntly and the serif added depth and interest without clashing.

If you’re using Gauntly in a multi-font system, I’d recommend keeping supporting fonts neutral. You want Gauntly to be the star—its personality is strong, and it works best when it’s not competing with other decorative styles.

Technical Considerations: What You Should Know

From a technical standpoint, Gauntly is well-structured. It comes with multiple alternates and ligatures, which I found useful for customizing the look in different applications. I also checked the multilingual support—it covers Western European languages, so it’s suitable for most English and European-based branding projects.

The font files were easy to install and worked seamlessly in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma. For web use, I embedded it via a font service and didn’t run into any loading issues. Licensing is standard for a commercial font like this, so as long as you purchase the appropriate license, you can use it in client work, merchandise, and marketing materials without any concerns.

Final Thoughts: A Font That Feels Like a Signature

By the end of the project, Gauntly had become a defining element of the bakery’s brand. It showed up in everything from the storefront sign to the thank-you notes on packaging. It gave the brand a sense of authenticity and warmth that would have been hard to achieve with a more generic font.

If you’re working on a branding project that needs a handwritten touch with a modern twist, Gauntly is definitely worth a try. It’s not just a script font—it’s a storytelling tool that brings personality and charm to any design. Whether you’re crafting a logo, designing packaging, or building a social media presence, Gauntly helps your work feel both personal and professional.

As with any font, I recommend testing it in your actual design context before committing. Try it at different sizes, on different backgrounds, and in both print and digital formats. You might just find that Gauntly gives your project the sweet, handwritten edge it needs to stand out.
